Playboy.com is seeking to put "the sexiest girls next door" in the palm of users' hands with the introduction of a new site feature, dubbed iBod.

The Playboy.com site is an online version of the adult magazine that also has special subscription-only features, such as a Cyber Club with several additional photo galleries of nude women.

iBod is an editorial feature on the site with both nude and non-nude images that can be downloaded to portable players. Although only a limited number of images have been made available, Playboy.com notes that the response has already been overwhelming.

Art of the Nude

By developing content that can be delivered through handheld media devices like Apple's iPod, the company hopes to expand its reach and explore the possibilities of photography and technology.

"Anytime technology comes along that's photography-related, we jump on it immediately," John D. Thomas, editor of Playboy.com, told NewsFactor. "We're one of the great photo companies of the world, so it's natural for us to try and find new ways to display our photography."

The company chose to call the feature iBod even though Playboy.com has no affiliation with Apple, and has made the content suitable for any media player that displays photography.

"We've initially focused on all handheld players, but we played on the name 'iPod' because of the enormous popularity of that player," Thomas said.

Currently, the images that are available consist of several non-nude images that were drawn from the site's archive and reformatted to fit the dimensions of a small media player screen. Additional nude content is being offered to Cyber Club members.

With the initial success of the feature, Playboy.com plans to do much more with bringing its content onto portable devices in the near future, said Thomas.

"We'd like to produce original material that's specifically designed and composed for that kind of digital space and resolution," he noted.

Potentially, music will also be added as well as multimedia so that images could be part of a slideshow that mimics a striptease, according to Thomas.

"There are many challenges, but it's fun to explore all the possibilities right now," he added.
