Variety of New Features Added to Evernote Apps
Variety of New Features Added to Evernote Apps

A beta version of Evernote 5 was released recently for Windows, although it's still very much a work in progress. The company said the new version has more than 100 improvements from previous incarnations, such as faster/more efficient search functions and a refreshed user interface, and Evernote-watchers are comparing it favorably to the functions in the Mac version.

Evernote, the notetaking app company, has been busy with features and updates to keep its various platform versions in sync and its business and consumer users happy. The most recent Evernote refresh includes, for Android users, the ability to edit office documents with the OfficeSuite app.

The Evernote app is designed to help users remember everything they do, across all their devices, so keeping the various versions in sync is key. Functions include saving content, taking notes, capturing photos, creating to-do lists or recording voice reminders.

Evernote has also updated its iPhone and iPad version with features designed to facilitate navigation. Users can now add shortcuts, formally called favorites, to their most important notes, notebooks, tags or even to saved searches, and the shortcuts are synced between devices. Shortcuts can be added simply by tapping the star icon on the bottom of a note, or the tab in the notebook or in a tag. Shortcuts can also be added to notes in a note list by swiping the note.

Related Notes

The new version 5.4 also offers Related Notes for premium users. This function looks for other items in an account that may relate to a project you're currently working on, and displays potentially related material. Free and Premium users also can see recently viewed notes at the bottom of an open note. The idea is to be able to jump between notes of related content without having to find and open them separately.

Evernote's Skitch app for smartphones and tablets is used for visual markup of images, PDFs and other notes, and it now can be used as an integral part of the iOS version of the app. After installing the Skitch app, users can now annotate an image in a note by tapping on the image and then selecting the Skitch icon. When the annotation is done, the image in the note is updated.

For PDFs in notes, users can also see and use the Edit with Skitch option in the title bar when the note is opened. To annotate an entire note that contains both images and text, the user can tap on the Skitch icon, which turns it into a PDF and opens it in Skitch.

Last month, Evernote released a Gmail version of its popular Evernote Web Clipper for Chrome. It allows for one-click saving of important e-mail messages and their attached files to Web Clipper, although the app only grabs what it can see. The subject line becomes the note's title, and all e-mail addresses appear at the top. Grabbed content can also be placed into an Evernote notebook, assigned relevant tags, or have a note added.

Reminders App

Evernote launched in May its Reminders app for Mac, iOS, and Evernote Web. It rolled up several of the most requested Evernote features into a single package, including email alarms and a quick, note-based to-do list. In June, Evernote released a version for Android.

A beta version of Evernote 5 was released recently for Windows, although it's still very much a work in progress. The company said that the new version has more than 100 improvements from previous incarnations, such as faster/more efficient search functions and a refreshed user interface, and Evernote-watchers are comparing it favorably to the functions in the Mac version. There is also the ability to separate business-related content from personal content.
