Microsoft's Azure cloud is now being secured by Barracuda Networks. On Monday Barracuda announced that the latest version of its Web Application Firewall is available through Microsoft’s Azure Gallery. Barracuda is presenting the update at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference being held this week in Washington, D.C.

The update extends support for the Azure platform with automated provisioning and configuration, according to the the Campbell, Calif-based cloud security and storage company.

Version 7.9 will be immediately available at no charge to existing customers subscribing to Energize Updates or who have active virtual appliance licenses. The company is listing the software from $4,999 to $61,599 for North American customers, depending on the model.

The Looming (Hybrid) Cloud

Almost 50 percent of large enterprises are likely to have hybrid cloud deployments by the end of 2017, according to a study by Gartner. IDC predicts that almost 20 percent of spending on applications will be for cloud-based technologies.

Barracuda is touting its firewall as the first integrated, fully scalable security solution to be available on Azure. “As one of the first Microsoft Azure certified partners, we see tremendous opportunity,” said Michael Hughes, SVP Worldwide Sales for Barracuda.

Azure is Microsoft’s cloud computing platform and infrastructure service that provides customers with a global network of managed datacenters for building, deploying and managing cloud-based applications. The platform was originally launched in 2010 as Windows Azure, and was later rebranded in March 2014.

Despite being part of the Microsoft family, the Azure platform also allows customers to run Linux virtual machines, Oracle databases, and use development tools such as Javascript, PHP and Ruby. The company has pitched Azure as the cloud version of its Windows Server solution, as it seeks to blur the line between the public cloud and on-site data storage.

Among the features Barracuda is touting for the latest version of its firewall are new functionalities accessible through the RESTful API, which it says improves automation of configuration and provisioning. In addition to enhanced public cloud support, the company also highlighted improved reporting and notification, increased application security, new infrastructure for templates, SSL enhancements that support perfect forward secrecy, and URL encryption. The new version of the firewall also includes third-party packaged applications including Microsoft SharePoint.

Adding to Azure

Microsoft has recently made several moves to bolster the Azure platform. Last week, it announced the acquisition of business continuity vendor InMage and said it would be integrating its technology into Azure.

Redmond also said it would be including its StorSimple data service in Azure beginning August 1, a service it claims will reduce the cost of high-volume data management. It also announced the availability of virtual machines on the Azure Gallery today. Other services Microsoft is offering through the Azure gallery include MongoDB, Nodejitsu Redis, and SendGrid Email.

Barracuda said it would also be providing virtual license portability, giving customers the ability to transfer virtual solutions from public to private clouds, or between public cloud services, at no additional cost.
