Dell Beefs Up Foglight Virtualization Portfolio
Dell Beefs Up Foglight Virtualization Portfolio

Dell has rounded out its portfolio to provide solutions for both SMBs and enterprises, and to address customers' specific concerns around supporting storage in virtualized environments. Foglight has been optimized for Dell's data center solutions, and is a core part of the company's end-to-end IT solutions strategy, said Pund-IT analyst Charles King.

Even as the battle over taking Dell private continues, the hardware maker is pushing forward with a new generation of its virtualization operations management suite. Three new solutions aim to help companies streamline virtualization, storage and cloud computing initiatives.

Specifically, the new releases include Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise and Standard Editions 7.0 and Foglight for Storage Management 3.0. According to the company, the new releases tackle several data center transformation challenges, from optimizing performance and efficiency in virtual environments to overcoming end-to-end storage obstacles in complex and cloud-based systems.

John Maxwell, executive director of product management at Dell Software, explained the market challenge: As Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) professionals are faced with increased expectations to deliver business value, they are expected to not only reduce the total cost of the data center, but also drive agility, quickly deploy new applications, and deliver the highest level of performance.

Maxwell argued that Dell's virtualization operations management suite helps simplify the complexity of modern data centers so I&O professionals can deliver on priorities. "This 'deliver more with less' conundrum is about having the ability to quickly and agilely scale the capacity of the data center up or down as business requirements change at the lowest possible cost," he said.

Shining Light on Virtualization

Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition 7.0 promises end-to-end performance monitoring and operations management for heterogeneous virtual environments to help reduce operational costs, speed deployments and simplify the complexity of the data center virtual and physical infrastructure.

The solution includes integration with storage, Microsoft Active Directory, and Microsoft Exchange modules to provide performance analysis and advice across data center infrastructure. Hitting the market Aug. 31, the price is $799 per physical socket in managed servers.

Foglight for Storage Management 3.0 helps to make sure IT has the right storage configuration to optimize virtual infrastructure performance and availability. It gives virtualization managers complete visibility into the underlying physical storage infrastructure that lies beneath the virtual datastores, enabling them to immediately identify hosts, VMs, and datastores experiencing performance problems caused by underlying physical host, fabric and storage components and tips to fix the issues. The price is $499 per socket and will be available Aug. 31.

Foglight for Virtualization, Standard Edition 7.0 is designed for the small and medium-size environment. The focus is on ease of use and quick time to value. The software offers administrators insight into virtual environment performance and automated resource optimization, capacity planning, chargeback and showback, and change analysis and compliance. The price is $399 per socket and will be available on Aug. 31.

Optimized for Dell's Data Center

We caught up with Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT, to get his take on the new Dell Foglight products. He told us the hardware maker has rounded out its portfolio to provide solutions for both SMBs and enterprises, and to address customers' specific concerns around supporting storage in virtualized environments.

"Those are all key Dell constituents and the more they come to rely on virtualization in their IT infrastructures, the more important operations management becomes," King said. "There are certainly competing offerings available from vendors including VMware. But Foglight has been optimized for Dell's data center solutions, and is a core part of the company's end-to-end IT solutions strategy."
