Dell Unveils VMware-Validated Desktop Virtualization Offerings
Dell Unveils VMware-Validated Desktop Virtualization Offerings

"Desktop virtualization models are gaining ground as today's IT departments are looking to streamline IT management and more easily address data security and BYOD policies," said analyst Matt Eastwood. "Dell has a unique advantage to provide a combination of products and services that provide complete data center-to-endpoint scale to help customers."

In a move it hopes will encourage more enterprises to adopt desktop virtualization, Dell is expanding its cloud-client computing offerings with new VMware-validated end points, storage solutions and reference architectures.

With its latest offerings, Dell has the "bring your own device" trend in mind. Dell is betting more enterprises will consider desktop virtualization to enable their mobile workforce as they tailor workstyle options to boost worker productivity, attract and retain employees, and increase competitiveness.

We caught up with Jeff McNaught, executive director of marketing and chief strategy officer for Dell Cloud Client Computing, to discuss the technology. He told us the new client computing offerings represent best-of-breed, end-to-end technologies designed to provide the best overall virtual desktop infrastructure experience.

"With our new Dell Wyse endpoints, EqualLogic storage arrays and reference architectures validated by VMware," McNaught says, "we are dramatically decreasing the complexity of deploying and managing a VDI solution, helping organizations to embrace BYOD, social, mobile and virtual workforces rather than fighting them."

Dell's Unique Advantage

Dell got nods from several industry partners, clients and analysts for its new technology, including Matt Eastwood, group vice president for Enterprise Platform Research at IDC.

Eastwood said Dell is distinguishing itself from other market players by building its innovation and acquired IP into a portfolio of market-leading end-to-end virtualization solutions.

"Desktop virtualization models are gaining ground as today's IT departments are looking to streamline IT management and more easily address data security and BYOD policies," Eastwood said. "Dell has a unique advantage to provide a combination of products and services that provide complete data center-to-endpoint scale to help customers address these growing challenges."

Drilling into the Offering

As part of the broader announcement, Dell introduced a dual-display capable Dell Wyse P25 and quad-display capable Dell Wyse P45 designed specifically for VMware View implementations.

Meanwhile, the new Dell EqualLogic PS6510ES (10GbE) and PS6500ES (1GbE) "hybrid" storage arrays bolster the company's end-to-end capabilities for VDI. Dell said the new products allow the company to offer a first-time combination of high-performance and high-capacity drive types in one, dense Dell EqualLogic 48-drive array. And new Dell EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for VMware 3.5 provides centralized EqualLogic management from VMware vCenter Server plus new storage recovery replica capabilities.

"Dell's new end-to-end cloud client computing offerings will allow for more organizations to take advantage of the benefits that desktop virtualization has to offer," said Vittorio Viarengo, vice president of End-User Computing at VMware. "By working together, VMware and Dell can provide a clear path for organizations to rapidly deploy a modern, end-user computing architecture from the desktop to the data center."

New Architectures

Dell has extended its collaboration with its partner ecosystem to deliver three new desktop virtualization reference architectures, validated in conjunction with VMware in addition to Dell's Desktop Virtualization Solutions for Government. Those are: vStart for VDI Reference Architecture; VMware AlwaysOn Point of Care Reference Architecture; and VMware Mobile Secure Desktop Reference Architecture.

In terms of availability, Dell Wyse P25 and P45 are set to roll out in the fourth quarter, along with Dell EqualLogic PS6510ES/ PS6500ES and Host Integration Tools for VMware 3.5. The new architectures are available now.
