By partnering with European and Latin American carrier Telefonica, Evernote is continuing to expand the reaches of its note-taking and cloud storage services to more customers. Its plan is to take over Brazil by offering Evernote Premium for free to Telefonica Vivo subscribers.

The service will be rolling out shortly and it will be the first time that Evernote has reached a deal with a major Latin American carrier. Prior to the Telefonica deal, Evernote partnered with Deutsche Telekom, NTT Docomo, and Taiwan Mobile.

The Deal

These special deals, including the one to upgrade current free users to premium plans, will only be lasting for a short time. How long the deal lasts, though, was not specified in the announcement but it will likely be until the end of this year or maybe a little longer.

Evernote has become very popular and its premium version only costs $45 per year, but offering it for free is still a great way to increase subscribers in a market that Evernote has yet to dominate.

Specifics of the deal between Evernote and Telefonica were not released but considering that there are millions of customers under Telefonica's wing that Evernote can reach, the deal is definitely significant.

"We are delighted to be able to offer our customers around the world this great service free for a year," Wayne Thorsen, the VP of Global Partnerships with Telefonica, told TechCrunch. Our customers have consistently told us that they desire services that make their life better beyond connectivity. Evernote does just this, but connects personal and business information in a way that actually makes it useable and findable."

The Evernote Takeover

This latest move positions Evernote to become a major force in Latin America. Around the world, Evernote is already gaining popularity with millions of people now using its note-taking applications for mobile phones and computers.

Evernote currently has more than 50 million users and according to its official statistics, the service is gaining 100,000 users each day. Earlier this year, Evernote chief executive Phil Libin was quoted in a Bloomberg Businessweek story explaining that he wants to reach one billion users.

One billion users would make Evernote one of the world's most used services and would even allow it to surpass Facebook. For an application that is simply meant to provide note taking and organizational features, millions of users is pretty impressive.

Since 2009, Evernote has been gaining traction worldwide because of its ability to sync notes across virtually every platform. This has made the service popular for individuals, schools, and workplaces.

Evernote is currently valued at more than $1 billion and the sky is the limit. While a billion dollar valuation is not as impressive as it used to be, it is still an incredible accomplishment for any application. With the Telefonica partnership, reaching a $2 billion valuation and 1 billion users may very well be possible.
