The winners of the Amazon Web Services' City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge were judged on the basis of the cloud solutions they offered. The criteria included the impacts of their solutions, the likelihood of long-term success, implementation of Amazon Web Services, and the potential to help other local governments with similar problems.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the winners of its first City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge. The winners receive between $25,000 and $50,000 in AWS credits.

The top winners of the Best Practices Awards are the New York City Department of Transportation; the City of Asheville, North Carolina; the London City Airport; and the City and County of San Francisco Planning Department. Each of these receive the top prize of $50,000 in AWS credits. The Best Practices Awards are intended to recognize local governments that have already adopted cloud technology and are currently using AWS services.

The winners of the Partner in Innovation Awards of $25,000 in credits are application developers Azavea, Neptune Technology Group, NuCivic, and Str LLC. All of these companies offered solutions for the challenges faced by local governments.

Real-Time Transportation Info

The winners, chosen by AWS and an expert panel, were judged on the basis of the cloud solutions they offered. The criteria included the impacts of their solutions, the likelihood of long-term success, implementation of AWS services, and the potential to help other local governments confronted with similar problems.

The New York City proposal involved mobile and Web apps that make real-time transportation information more accessible to residents and visitors. Its solution includes a parking regulations interactive map, a travel planning app for pedestrian travel in the city, and online maps of construction sites and projects.

NYC Transportation CTO Cordell Schachter told news media that cloud-based services "helps us provide important transportation information directly to the public and to our staff every day and during critical times.”

A cloud-based disaster recovery system is Asheville's project, and the London City Airport is creating a traveler app that uses real-time data from sensors, airline systems and airport services for efficiently navigating the airport. San Francisco is building a Web site for accessing detailed property information for zoning, real estate transactions and permitting.

'Predictive Policing'

Azavea's HunchLab provides a machine learning application for "predictive policing" of crime in high-risk areas, drawing on crime data, weather, neighborhood businesses and other real-time information.

CEO and president Robert Cheetham said in a statement that his company anticipates "a world in which geospatial analysis is a broad foundation upon which government, private, and non-profit organizations operate."

NuCivic DATA is an open source management platform that can be used by governments to make open data sets available to the public. The data is intended for use by cities as well as by third-party developers to create services and applications for citizens.

The award to Nepture Technology Group's N_SIGHT IQ will support its cloud-based data mart, which local utility companies can utilize to better manage local water usage by giving citizens access to tools and information.

A property inventory management system from Str LLC's ePropertyPlus can be used by cities to manage community revitalization efforts. It aggregates and maps information on development grants, ownership and construction plans for vacant or abandoned properties.
