In the U.K. and the U.S., shortages of the iPhone 5s were prevalent, especially when it came to the golden version. As a result, most retail stores ran out of the 5s within a few hours of opening and the few that did not, only had the gray color option left -- the gold iPhones sold out immediately.
Perhaps the most significant shortage was in London where stores ran out of the gold iPhone 5s just five minutes after the stores opened. Apple frequently has a hard time keeping up with demand for its new devices, but for an iPhone to sell out in a matter of minutes is far more significant than running out later in the day.
Everyone Wants Gold, Not Gray
Even with all of the interest and excitement surrounding the iPhone 5s itself, people flocked toward the gold version instead of the gray or silver units. This may have something to do with the fact that gold has never been offered as an iPhone color choice, but either way, it resulted in a lot of happy -- and unhappy -- people today.
Just a few moments after Apple's online store began offering the new iPhone 5s, the gold version was showing a wait period longer than seven to 10 days. Initially, the gold version was going to be available within a week but shortly afterward, Apple updated that to sometime in October.
Of course, once people had waited in line for hours, most of them were not going to leave empty-handed even if they were not able to secure the object of their desires -- the gold iPhone 5s. So, most retail stores began selling out of the silver and gray versions of the 5s as well, and they still were able to accommodate buyers much further into the day.
The iPhone 5s
The iPhone 5s is an intermittent update to the iPhone lineup providing only a few spec and feature changes when compared to the iPhone 5. As such, the features of the 5s include an improved camera, slightly longer battery life, and of course, a fingerprint .
Apple's decision to include a fingerprint scanner led to tons of excitement, and based off initial reviews, the excitement seems justified. Multiple reviewers on well-known sites have commented on just how amazing the fingerprint scanner is.
The fingerprint scanner is built right into the home button and after it gets used to a user placing his finger on the button at different angles, it can be used to unlock the iPhone. Not only will the fingerprint scanner recognize the main iPhone user but it also supports up to five different fingerprints.
With all of the backordered iPhone 5s units and the pushed back ship date for the gold 5s, many customers will have to wait weeks in order to get their devices. The question is: Will Apple learn from today's rush of customers and stock more units for future launches?

I would say the 5s is a major improvement from iphone 5.

"...only a few spec and feature changes when compared to the iPhone 5." Oh really? I'd say moving to the 64-bit A7 chip is pretty significant, if not THE major improvement for iPhone 5s. I'm continually amazed by the media's lack of attention to this (although given the average buyer who is so easily enamoured by a "big screen" and "shiny new colors" I suppose it makes sense).

Why does every one keep referring to the non-grey iPhone as "gold"... look at your picture above. It's not even close to "gold"... it's Metallic Beige.
