Red Hat Contributes ManageIQ to OpenStack

"As the OpenStack infrastructure layers build out, it's encouraging to see people like Red Hat focusing on solving these cloud management problems," said Michael Cote, a research director at 451 Group. "And open sourcing ManageIQ will help provide an interesting, mature code base to the community, not to mention the product itself."

Red Hat just rolled out code that aims to drive OpenStack adoption and advance cloud management. The ManageIQ community promises to help govern and automate the open-source cloud.

Red Hat is contributing software it acquired from ManageIQ to OpenStack. This is the company's largest-ever contribution to the open source project. ManageIQ undergirds Red Hat's CloudForms, an open hybrid cloud management solution. The company is also providing integration and orchestration content for lab automation as part of the deal. The idea is to make it easier to develop and test clouds based on OpenStack.

"While some industry players have focused on building an open-source cloud infrastructure with OpenStack and selling expensive, proprietary management software on top of that, we believe the entire cloud should be open with no lock-in, so we are contributing this valuable code base to open up the management stack for the first time," said Joe Fitzgerald, general manager of cloud management at Red Hat.

Solving Cloud Management Problems

The ManageIQ community brings together developers, service providers, system integrators, researchers and users that want to collaborate and drive innovation in OpenStack management and open hybrid clouds. Red Hat plans to launch the new ManageIQ open-source community in the coming weeks.

Red Hat is looking at it this way: As more developers turn to OpenStack to build and integrate private cloud deployments, lab automation is still a critical piece of the puzzle. The company is convinced that ManageIQ can provide the management capabilities developers need, integrating with a number of OpenStack technologies and projects, including Nova, Glance, Ceilometer and Heat.

"OpenStack has been evolving at breakneck speed and it's clear that proper monitoring and management is needed, from the basics of red/green light monitoring to higher-level orchestration," said Michael Coté, research director of market research firm 451 Group's Infrastructure Software sector.

"As the OpenStack infrastructure layers build out, it's encouraging to see people like Red Hat focusing on solving these cloud management problems, and open sourcing ManageIQ will help provide an interesting, mature code base to the community, not to mention the product itself."

Leveraging Deep Integration

ManageIQ offers a set of management and operational capabilities for all cloud deployments, from chargeback to tag-based policy and orchestration, to capacity management. As enterprises and service providers build their cloud infrastructure using OpenStack, Red Hat said they will be able to use the open-source ManageIQ platform to manage those environments.

"We believe that a multi-cloud environment should leverage deep integration across domains and processes, and we have developed rich content that leverages the strength of the ManageIQ platform to do just that," said Michael Farber, executive vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton. "By actively participating in the community, we will be focusing on advancing the key integration aspects of the platform."

Booz Allen Hamilton, along with Auto Trader Group, CirBA and Chef are among the companies in Red Hat's partner ecosystem that will be providing additional content to the ManageIQ community.

"Success in today's digitally driven economy means delighting customers, which is only possible by using Web-scale IT to move at extreme speed and scale," said Ken Cheney, vice president of Business Development at Chef. "Red Hat's ManageIQ Community brings together best-of-breed open source, cloud computing, and IT automation technologies -- all core components of Web-scale IT -- and offers them on a single, open platform."
