Hybrid Azure Starter Kit Offered by Carpathia, Equinix

The announcement by Carpathia and Equinix about partnering on a Starter Kit for Microsoft's Azure platform was the latest news to come out of the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference being held in Washington, D.C., this week. Several other Microsoft partners have also announced new offerings for the company's Azure cloud platform.

Carpathia, the Dulles, Virginia-based cloud service and managed hosting provider, announced the release of its Starter Kit for Microsoft's Azure platform, in collaboration with Equinix. The kit is a hybrid cloud offering providing direct access to the Azure public cloud through Carpathia-managed platforms and the Equinix Cloud Exchange, the company said in a statement.

The Cloud Exchange is an interconnection solution that provides access to multiple clouds and networks. Carpathia and Equinix claim that access to the exchange will provide Azure users with improved security, control and performance in comparison with the public Internet.

Securing the Cloud

The starter kit's architecture is suitable for a variety of high-performance workloads and applications including compliant solutions, data analytics, business continuity and disaster recovery, as well as development and testing, Carpathia said. The Equinix Cloud Exchange allows clients to meet high-level security requirements and industry standards including HIPAA, SOX and GLBA.

Equinix and Carpathia are frequent partners, having collaborated for 10 years on co-location deployment, managed services and cloud solutions for clients with strict privacy and data protection requirements. Equinix will be contributing the use of its Cloud Exchange, which is hosted on its international network of data centers.

The announcement by Carpathia and Equinix was the latest news to come out of the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference being held in Washington, D.C., this week. Several other Microsoft partners have recently announced new offerings for the company's Azure hybrid cloud platform.

On Monday, Barracuda Networks announced the latest version of its Web Application Firewall for the Azure gallery, and its participation as a member of the Microsoft Azure Circle Partner program, a group of organizations providing deployment planning services for customers moving to the cloud. Carpathia was selected in June to participate in the program.

For Large Enterprises

Dave Stinson, Carpathia's vice president of Sales, pitched the starter kit as being explicitly designed to address the concerns of large organizations with significant security requirements.

"Businesses and federal agencies of all sizes are struggling with how to balance strict security and compliance requirements with the instant access, scale and cost benefits of the public cloud," Stinson said in a statement.

Azure is Microsoft's cloud computing platform and infrastructure service, which provides customers with a global network of managed data centers for building, deploying and managing cloud-based applications. The platform was originally launched in 2010 as Windows Azure, and was rebranded in March 2014.

Despite being part of the Microsoft family, the Azure platform also allows customers to run Linux virtual machines, Oracle databases, and use development tools such as Javascript, PHP and Ruby. The company has pitched Azure as the cloud version of its Windows Server solution, as it seeks to blur the line between the public cloud and on-site data storage.
