The Time 100 list is out and more than a dozen technology leaders are on the list. The coveted list offers up the 100 most influential people in the world and includes rappers like Jay Z, basketballers like LeBron James, politicians like Rand Paul and film makers like Steven Spielberg.

And, of course, some big-named and lesser-known technology gurus. Among the most recognized tech leaders on the Time 100 list are Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.

"The Time 100 issue represents our choices for the 100 most influential people in the world," writes Richard Stengel, editor of Time magazine. "It's our 10th year doing it, and the cover always presents a special challenge. This year we are trying something new: seven cover portraits of Time 100 honorees who reflect the breadth and depth of our list, each one profiled inside -- as is our tradition -- by an equally luminary voice."

Kickstarting the List

Time eliminated some of the biggest names in technology, like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Megaupload creator Kim Dotcom, Twitter mastermind Jack Dorsey and Google co-founder Sergey Brinn, from the list. Instead, the magazine went after some lesser-known influential people, like Kickstarter CEO Perry Chen.

Kickstarter is a crowdsourced fundraising site for creative and tech projects. Since its launch in 2009, more than 3.8 million people have pledged over $571 million, funding more than 39,000 creative projects.

"There's something so smart and magical about that idea," Kristen Bell wrote about Chen. Bell's Veronica Mars movie project recently surpassed all fundraisers on the site. "Connecting consumers with creators and letting them vote with their own money," she continued. "I haven't met Perry yet, but I look forward to it so I can thank him for his brain."

Elon Musk, the CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla, made the list, along with Minecraft creator Markus Persson and co-developer Jens Berensten. Others to make the list include Jony Ive, the lead designer and senior vice president of industrial design at Apple, and Oh-Hyun Kwon, CEO of Samsung.

Coursera founders Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller landed on the list. They founded the online education start-up that is making major waves. Then there's Instagram's founder, Don Yeomans, who made headlines when Facebook bought his company, but doesn't get much media attention.

Netflix's chief content officer also got some praise. Ted Sarandos made the Time list, along with tech incubator Kai-Fu Lee and rover drivers Peter Theisinger and Richard Cook.

We asked Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group for his take on the Time 100 List's tech-heavy representation. He told us tech is where the action is right now.

"Tech is an industry that's been holding reasonably well in the U.S.," he said. "Clearly, tech is the strongest top three in terms of the financial performance -- or has been. Tech remains one of the biggest resources for the Unites States and this list reflects that importance."
