An invitation to another Apple press event has gone out, this time for Oct. 22. Let the speculation commence in three, two, one....
The legendary company is expected to show new iPads at the event, which will take place in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater.
But Apple event speculation has risen to such a level of art that some Cupertino-watchers have developed ways to decipher the visual and textual codes of the event invitations. For instance, the invitation to last month's event featured different colored circles, some empty gray-outlined ones, the Apple logo and the words, "This should brighten everyone's day." As might be decoded in retrospect, that event showcased colored iPhones and a new Touch ID.
'A Little More To Show You'
For the event last October, when the iPad mini was introduced, the outline of an Apple logo was shown against a field of dappled colors, and the legend read: "We've got a little more to show you." The event unveiled the iPad mini, as well as a new MacBook Pro and new iMacs.
The invitation for this coming event, which shows falling, colored fall leaves, the logo, and the words, "We still have a lot to cover," doesn't give many hints. But that isn't enough to stop the decoders, who suggest it might mean colored iPad minis or Macs. But some are also picking up on rumors from the summer that Apple was readying a larger, 13-inch iPad with a detachable keyboard, to compete with Microsoft's Surface and the hybrid laptop/tablets.
At the very least, the rumor mill expects the technology giant will show a new regular-sized, 9.7-inch iPad, as well as an ungraded iPad mini with the high-resolution Retina display. Other possibilities include the release of more details about the upcoming OS X Mavericks operating system for Mac computers, and there might be some new Mac models, such as a new Mac Pro. The Mac Pro and Mavericks were previewed in June at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference.
Apple is battling expectations on several fronts. Its dominant market share in tablets is beginning to slump, as Android-based models emerge at lower price points and major feature differentiators between tablets begins to blur. The company that created new product categories is now releasing iterations of its current product lines, even as rumors persist that it is working on an iWatch and a new kind of Apple TV.
A month ago, Apple unveiled two new iPhone models, which sold 9 million units in the first weekend they were available. The iPad was last updated almost exactly a year ago, when the mini was first shown.
At that time, there had been pressure on Apple to downsize the iPad, given Google's success with its smaller Nexus 7 and Amazon with its Kindle. Both of the smaller competitive models now have higher resolution screens than the iPad mini, which is a key reason a Retina mini is expected. But, even if a Retina mini is shown, there are questions as to its availability, considering reports that Apple has encountered problems in manufacturing enough smaller Retina screens.
