Apple's iOS 7 launch is fast becoming its most troubled mobile operating system update, increasing concern that the technology giant has lost some of its magic touch since co-founder Steve Jobs passed away two years ago.
Since iOS 7 was released Sept. 18, the list of bugs and flaws has grown.
Draining batteries, dropping Wi-Fi and spotty Bluetooth connections are getting big boos across discussion boards at Apple's own support communities. Some apps are working poorly or slowly, the interface is harder to use for some people, and game players have also found faults.
"Apple really needs to get back to focusing on device testing and hyper attention to detail to maintain customers' trust," says Jefferson Wang, senior partner with IBB Consulting.
Text messaging via iMessage, nearly as indispensable as a phone call, has users fuming over an inability to consistently send text messages from iPhones with the new operating system.
On iMessage, "I'll do the hard restart, and that seems to work, but it's pretty frustrating. It shouldn't happen this way, because everyone uses iMessage," Eric Retzlaff, 33, who works at The Doctors Company in Napa, Calif., said in an interview.
Some users of Apple's new flagship iPhone 5s have even experienced a "blue screen of death," familiar to many who have seen a Windows computer screen freeze and turn blue.
"It did feel more like a Microsoft release," Retzlaff said. "I've never had an issue like this with one of their updates, so it's pretty shocking."
Apple's problems raise questions about its dramatic mobile makeover decisions and the company's elevation of Jony Ive to oversee much of that development.
Apple is familiar with smaller iPhone software problems. Its launch of its own Maps app was taken to task for failed directions and missing landmarks. That led to the firing of Maps chief Rich Williamson and an eventual apology from CEO Tim Cook.
"It's Apple's most problematic operating system launch so far," said Raluca Budiu, senior researcher at consulting firm Nielsen Norman Group, which released a report on Oct. 12 saying the design of the operating system makes it harder to use.
Buttons that used to stand out now blend with the background, and links that used to be visible may now be mistaken for plain text, the consulting firm said. (continued...)

I will join the chorus on this article's comments and the Apple discussion forums: ios 7 is a miserable failure with a significant group of Apple customers. I have had an iphone since the iphone 2 and loved each one until my 4S updated to ios 7. Now I get headaches from the glare, eye strain, and poor design. I've tried all the work-arounds to no success. Each week brings more apps which I formerly used daily trashed by a switch to the sterile, colorless ios 7 design. If Apple does not release some fix for the design problems by January I'm switching to a Galaxy phone.

I hate absolutely everything about IOS7!!!....I have been an avid iphone user since the beginning, but that is about to be changed. I have struggled with this OS since its release, to the point of wanting to smash my phone with a hammer! Go back to IOS6 or I am going with a different brand! It's pathetic how you (Apple) have alienated so many of your customers with this piece of garbage, and no way to revert back.

"if you don't like it, get something else.."
I did! Now I use a HTC One and I am very happy with it. Been a iOS user from the start. iOS 7 was the worst decision this company ever did. Ugly and NOT user friendly. Mt Lion bad, Maverick will force us to have our data in the cloud. If I find a good replacement OS X is going to be history too. Steve left a big gap in this company. What a pity!

Sorry, I have not had any problems.

iOS7 is just so ugly - and there's more than that as one can read all over here and there. If they are lucky (and bright), they might get a second chance: they should kill that misdeed and start again from iOS6 and it's well design and good usability, where things were beautiful and smooth.

Sounds like you guys just swapped an apple for a lemon ...lol

BATTERY DRAIN iPhone 4S. I have done all the fixes and the battery life is horrible. If Apple thinks I'm going to buy an iPhone 5 to solve the battery problem, they're wrong. I will switch to a competitor.

The designer of ios7 is a complete Idiot !!!
Posted: 2013-10-24 @ 9:52pm PT
I wish I could go back to iOS6, battery draining quickly and all email accounts are missing drafts folder, even if I create a drafts folder on iOS7 device, the folder doesn't sync. On Apple's website they state that Exchange protocol doesn't allow syncing with iOS device but that's a load of hogwash since there wasn't a problem in iOS6 & there still isn't a problem for the devices that didn't upgrade. We have about 40 iPads that haven't upgraded (and they won't) whereas a couple of us have & regret it.
Posted: 2013-10-24 @ 12:27am PT
Now Jaguar Land Rover in the UK has advised staff not to upgrade to iOS7 until there is a stable version of it.
The reputational damage to Apple of this garbage is growing, not reducing. Here's hoping the court case in California to give users the ability to remove the pending install or walk back to iOS6 is a success.

I thought Mt Lion was bad......that was NOTHING compared to this POS.......how sad Apple has lost it's reputation of superior quality. Who knew it was ONLY about Steve.

I do not like ios7 . The rolling makes my head spin and I do not not like the change on the color of the apps. I installed the update and it changed my home page wallpaper .
Posted: 2013-10-23 @ 2:10am PT
I had lots of colleagues telling me I should update to iOS7 and that it was great. Now they all regret jumping in.
I'm the only one still using iOS6 and the only one without iPhone problems. Mine is the only phone with a battery that lasts all day. I refused to update my iPad too and since then two of the guys actually have offered to buy it, such is their regret at having sullied their own pads with that rubbish looking crayon creation.
Either Apple allows users to row back iOS6 and have it on new handsets and pads, or I'm defecting to Samsung and Android. I will not buy a device that has been debased with iOS7. Period.

An Apple is not an Apple if it's rotten.
iOS7 is Pure Garbage, i've wasted so much time on this.
iMessage is a joke, how can it not activate my phone number on my phone when it can activate it on my computer and it has it listed in my Apple ID?
I missed about a whole weeks worth of communication from friends and clients who had messaged me from their iphones.
Gone are the days when Apple made Microsoft look stupid.
And...my battery sucks.
Posted: 2013-10-22 @ 8:21pm PT
I hate the new ios7!!! My battery dies 3 times as fast no matter what "fix " i use, texts and even emails dissappear into thin air and are never delievered. Delayed emails and texts come and go 2 days later!
Posted: 2013-10-22 @ 1:32pm PT
Battery drain = definite issue for me. Already did all the supposed fixes, still went down 8% just while reading this article. Since starting off at 100% five hours ago, the only other things I've done on the phone = played music for about 40 minutes, tracked a package on USPS. Battery's now at 18%. With ios6 and every previous version, never had a problem, could go days without charging. Now my laptop lasts longer than the phone.

They need to allow users to downgrade when the "upgrade" is as pathetic as iOS 7.
Posted: 2013-10-22 @ 9:00am PT
As a 4s user, I would downgrade to ios 6 in a heartbeat if I could. I write music and record snips into voice memos all the time, which now is slow and a pain in the .... The music player is buggy beyond belief. Most of the time, I can't listen to an album or playlist without something going wrong.
I also take pictures sort of semi-pro/amateurally and it's hard to see the full frame as you take the picture, and afterwards you can't pinch back to see the true picture dimensions anymore. Serious pain in the ....

Lots of little nuances, have not noticed battery issues. However, the iMessage issues are horrible. Delayed messages, messages never sent/received. How is this even remotely acceptable? I know of lots of people who have this issue, so don't tell me it's a fraction of a percent. That is total bs. And it is happening across multiple carriers, so don't tell me it is not related to Apple's software. Rebooting constantly is not exactly ideal, and at this point, we have all had to switch to sms since iMessage is not reliable.
IT IS A MESSAGING SERVICE!!! How did Apple screw up something so simple as a messaging service!!!
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 11:53pm PT
I simply have to turn off Imessage, I do not trust the service anymore. Back to good old SMS or try another messenger...IOS 7 killed it.

Jobs is gone and so is all the good he created. At Apple now they don't even know how to keep the good graphics that not only worked but were fun to see and use. Now it's flat and I can't even read it or know where to touch half the time. I had the first iPhone and every new one since, but if I can't get the old operating system back, I will try to buy an old phone or look at another phone manf. altogether. Too bad Apple, one step forward, two steps back. Apple has proven that no one there has the eye that Steve had for design and graphics. Fix it or forget it!!!
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 7:18pm PT
Glad I didn't update. I knew it was worth holding back. I just wish there was a way to make the update notification on the system settings icon disappear.
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 6:15pm PT
Not happy at all Apple!!! Hurry up and fix the problem or I'm sure you will lose a lot of customers!!! Really pissed off. iMessage not working. Facetime not working and it keeps saying network problem when I've reset my phone heaps but nothing is fixing this problem.
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 3:10pm PT
Apple needs to stop making changes to their products for the sake of change! Seriously. Did I really need to stop swiping from left to right to delete something and do it the other way? Get a life!
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 2:50pm PT
This is just media hyping as usual. The bugs aren't noticeable enough to affect usability, and all the years the OS stayed the same, it was bound to change completely, and now that it has, you people are complaining? Of course it's going to have a few bugs here and there.
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 12:29pm PT
Apple needs to stop patting themselves on the back and stick to test & evaluation of software which improves the user experience.
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 12:23pm PT
Come on apple man up and let us go back to the ios6
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 11:43am PT
Oh, I've even turned down brightness settings to preserve battery life, turned off motion and a few other things and the battery life still sucks.
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 11:39am PT
I have heard mixed reviews about the update. However the majority have experienced problems with the new update, including myself. The battery life dies way to fast, I hate it because I need my phone constantly due to always being gone. Apple needs to fix this issue ASAP
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 11:26am PT
We pay a premium to Apple so the "bugs" are ironed out BEFORE. If bugs remain after paying a premium, then why are we paying?
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 10:48am PT
I cannot receive or make phone calls since I "upgraded" to Ios7. Very angry!!
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 8:02am PT
Fire Ives. Fire whoever approved this release of 7 before it was stable. Failure to do so will spell the end of Apple's unique place in the market.
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 6:10am PT
Hate the new OS on every level and will not download it to my iPad or mini. For me the most frustrating piece is that my apps touch screen doesn't respond to and takes 4-5 tries. I also had to delete my Account App because it no longer would sync with my other devices via ICloud. I would delete it off my phone if I could. I hate the calendar and all my notes wiped out. I disconnected the phone from sharing with my other devices.

My wife and I both hate IOS7 and want our IOS6 back but the Apple Nazis won't allow it.
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 4:12am PT
My comment is a question: How can I go back to OS6? How can I undo the download? I don't like it at all. Looking forward to suggestions and help. Thanks

ios7 is the worst interface of any phone. It is flat, lacks any form of intuitiveness and kills the battery. For this reason, my next phone will NOT be an iphone. Back to android for me.
Posted: 2013-10-21 @ 3:12am PT
Strange to read about these issues! I've been one of the early adopters and have not been faced with any issues thus far except for quick battery drains.
Posted: 2013-10-20 @ 11:28pm PT
I have had nothing but problems with iMessage since upgrading. Our two phones are slower and messages are not delivered. Some emails don't go out. Wish we had not upgraded our phones or ipad.
Posted: 2013-10-20 @ 10:23pm PT
I got the battery drain issue on my iPhone 4. I was really frustrated because I am always out of town for business purposes. I found some solutions from this site: http://www.techyv.com/questions/fix-battery-drain-issues-ios-7-update

It looks like Apple was more interested in changing the operating system than it was in improving it. There are too many faults or irritations for my taste. Jony Ive should be fired immediately and Apple apologize for what they've done and return to the previous version.
Posted: 2013-10-20 @ 7:59pm PT
I totally agree 100% when I was beta testing this OS I thought that it wouldn't be liked as much for these exact reasons. Many die hard apple fan boys argued with me tooth and nail on this and well I hate to say but they were being completely arrogant to what I had to say. Anyways I'm glad I'm not "stupid" or "crazy" or "don't know what I am talking about" and that many others agree with me.

Persistent email failures in a major US city: cannot connect to server. This is inexcusable in a business tool. And nothing from Apple--not even an acknowledgment of this disaster.

Why are you expecting magic, or visionary ideas from a specialist in EXCEL...

iOS7 is very annoying, because of ...
- Bugs, bugs, bugs … and … some more bugs.
- Control Center is much overloaded, so you switch things on and off unintentionally.
- Control Center has very low contrast. Depending on the background it is sometimes impossible to recognize a symbol.
- Control Center is nearly not accessible if you have your device in a casing with a frame around the screen.
- You often open Control Center accidentally while scrolling upwards.
- Many Icons have strange colors which are either too blurry or too flashy.
- Many Icons have a strange design which has nothing to do with its function, e.g. Game-Center, Reminders, Photos, etc.
- The Flat icon design looks either old fashioned or very primitive.
- Transparency or translucency destroys contrast.
- 3D- or moving-effects have no benefit, but they can cause dizziness.
- The new picker looks like a newbie draft.
- Folders can only hold 9 icons in one screen (16 in iOS6 on the iPhone, 20 on the iPad). So, if you do not need more than 16 (20) icons in a group – and that is most common – it’s easier with iOS6.
- Missing buttons (now plain text) make it difficult to find the functions. Often you do not know if something hides a function or if it’s just a name, title or description.
- Switches look like cheap prototypes.
- Several functions are only usable if you KNOW exactly where to find them. There is no chance for an unfamiliar user.
- Calculator has no memory buttons in normal mode.
- Calculator buttons are not enough separated.
- The Notes-app has a very dazzling background color and is not as eye-friendly as the “old paper”-like look of iOS6.
- The Calendar is confusing and not well-arranged.
- Fonts are much too thin and therefore often difficult to read.
- The new “whole-screen-unlock-function” bears the risk of unlocking the phone unintentionally in ones pocket.
- You have to swipe down to find the Spotlight-search. Often you open an App or scroll down a list or open the Notification Center unintentionally instead of opening the Spotlight-search.
- The Spotlight-search is less powerful than before. In iOS6 you can search the Web.
- The preview in the task list is mostly useless. If you only want to change an App, and that is what you do most with the task list – you have less Apps in view and more to scroll between.
- Media-controls are often more difficult to access.
- Figuring out the “New-App” indicator is much harder.
- It’s more difficult to switch to contact details from a text message.
... and many more ...

My iPhone is now just a simple phone. I hate using it since the download.

Blown !!!WAY!!! out of proportion... My phone has not had ANY of these issues and never once crashed and I have really put it to the test! So Grain of Salt writing.

Bring back iOS 6. At least it worked without any flaws. iOS 7 is a disaster!! Is Apple planning to do anything about fixing the problem???
Posted: 2013-10-20 @ 11:37am PT
As soon as I downloaded iOS7, I was disappointed and tried very hard to downgrade to iOS6 but no luck of course. The thing that irritates me is the inability to delete music which was once so easy and also to not be able to make folders on the home page to keep similar apps together. Small things and of course where has Google gone!
Posted: 2013-10-20 @ 9:03am PT
Apps crash, devices randomly reboot, even ipad 4 staggers and jumps around, neither smooth or sleek. IOS is vista and win8 combined but at you can downgrade those.
