Verizon Rolls Out Next-Gen FiOS Mobile App

The FiOS Mobile app from Verizon offers live linear television content as well as on-demand content. More than 45,000 titles are currently available on demand. Customers can also access thousands of free and subscription-on-demand content from brands like HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Encore, Food Network, HGTV, and Travel Channel.

In a move to expand mobile video watching possibilities -- and compete with rival carriers -- Verizon is rolling out an improved FiOS Mobile App. The app now makes it possible to watch live linear content as well as video on demand.

The new FiOS Mobile App supports what Verizon calls the "Borderless Lifestyle," which is a glorified way to say anywhere, any time access to streaming content. The app, for example, lets you tap into television shows on a wide range of mobile devices. However, BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone 8 are notably absent from the mix.

"The FiOS Mobile app has a wide variety of content choice for all ages and interests, from the do-it-yourselfer to the moviegoer, and this is just the beginning," said Maitreyi Krishnaswamy, director of FiOS TV's consumer video services. "Close collaboration with content and software partners, allows us to deliver a seamless customer experience, which will become even better as the content choices grow over time."

Expanded Content Lineup

Verizon hinted that it would add more content later this year. For now, smartphone users can choose from nine live TV channels, depending on their current FiOS TV package, via the iPad and certain Android tablets and phones. The app is also available on the iPhone and Kindle Fire tablets.

Of course, FiOS TV customers have been using smartphones and tablets to watch up to 76 live linear channels at home for some time. Now, with the FiOS Mobile app, they can also watch content from BBC America, BBC World News, EPIX, NFL Network, including Thursday Night Football, Tennis Channel and networks from Scripps Networks Interactive including Food Network and Travel Channel.

What's more, FiOS customers in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., can use their tablets and smartphones to watch local news and weather at home on the local affiliates of ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox and Spanish-language channels such as UniMas and Univision.

More Than 45,000 Movies

On the movies front, the FiOS Mobile app also offers on-demand content. More than 45,000 titles are currently available. Customers can also access thousands of free and subscription-on-demand content from brands like HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Encore, Food Network, HGTV, and Travel Channel.

The new FiOS Mobile app also condenses existing apps and incorporates functionality from FiOS Mobile Remote and Verizon Media Manager into one single FiOS TV entertainment destination. The unified app promises a user-friendly experience that makes content discovery and video viewing easy with functions like TV listings, My Bookmarks, My Library, On Demand, DVR, Settings and Help. Parental controls are also part of the app.
