Pivotal Launches Enterprise Platform as a Service
Pivotal Launches Enterprise Platform as a Service

On Tuesday, Pivotal, a spinoff from EMC and VMware, made a major dual announcement: the availability of Pivotal CF, an enterprise distribution of Cloud Foundry; and Pivotal One, a set of services to run on top of that platform.

Pivotal CF is a professional version of the open-source software developed by VMware. Pivotal One will deliver a suite of applications and services on top of Pivotal CF, including a Hadoop distribution, a MySQL service and an enterprise messaging system.

Paul Maritz, former Microsoft executive and former CEO of VMware, is at the helm of the company with ambitions that reflect typical big-picture thinking. "As we stated when we started the company, we set out to deliver a new platform for a new era," he said.

The Tuesday launch is all about business developers. Fundamentally, the new Pivotal software and services give businesses new power to deal with massive online applications, making the tasks far less daunting and far more interesting.

Starting November 15, when the platform and software become available, development teams will have a set of tools to build, update and scale applications on a cloud infrastructure quickly; application expansions and upgrades can be done instantly with no downtime. Developer teams will be able to handle applications across public or private clouds.

The services are designed to answer the needs of developers to plug in data services and perform deep user analytics on top of massive data sets. The combo of Pivotal CF and Pivotal One reinforces Pivotal's ambition to be the standout technology company at the intersection of PaaS (platform as a service), big data, and agile development.

Developers in Ready To Run Mode

The launch feeds into today's needs for businesses who are paring down on traditional models and replacing them instead with Internet-based programs. Supporting that, cloud-based technology offerings have expanded into something called the PaaS option, whereas a business can adopt a construct that provides a computing platform and solution stack as a service.

Platform One basically puts "a ready-to-run, development-through-production environment at the fingertips of any enterprise," said Stacey Schneider, managing editor of the company's GoPivotal blog.

"With a few simple commands, cloud operators in enterprises can set up and deploy the kinds of horizontally scalable development environments previously only possible with large, internal IT developer services competencies that the Internet giants could afford," she stated.

Specifically, the Pivotal One services include, among other features, the Pivotal HD Service, where cloud operators can build, manage, and scale Hadoop as a natively integrated Pivotal CF Service. Via the Service Broker, applications can bind to this service automatically.

Hadoop, MySQL Boosts

Regarding the Pivotal HD service, the company said, "For application developers this reduces development cycle time by eliminating the typical complexities around deployment, security, networking, and resource management that are commonly associated with developing applications on Hadoop."

Also included is a MySQL Service where enterprises can provision multi-tenant, single instance MySQL databases for rapid application development and testing.
