Just as we have seen with the smartphone market, Android is steadily overtaking iOS in tablets as well, according to a new report. Industry research firm Canalys has released a study declaring that Android tablets are now more prominent than the iPad in the global market.
Instead of the 71 percent market share the iPad had in Q2 2012, Apple's control of the market has fallen to just 42.7 percent, with Android now in the lead. Along with a loss in market share, Apple experienced significant negative growth in the tablet market of 14 percent whereas Samsung, Amazon, and Lenovo all saw increases of more than 200 percent.
Canalys and other analysts suspect that the lack of any new iPads has resulted in the major decline in market share, while in contrast there are new Android tablets coming onto the market every month in a range of form factors and configurations.
Small Tablets Dominate
Canalys' report showed more than just a decline in iPad sales, it also revealed that small tablets have gained a significant amount of attention. Of the tablets sold in Q2, 68 percent were in the under 9-inch screen size category.
With only the iPad Mini to compete with a slew of other devices, Apple has been unable to attract enough customers, mainly because of higher pricing as well as lack of diversity. Tablets such as the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Note 8.0 have become popular and, due to more frequent product line updates, Android tablet manufacturers have been able to optimize their devices to beat the iPad.
Applications have continued to be a saving grace for Apple and its iPad lineup.
"Despite its 53 percent share, Android still lags far behind iOS in the availability of fully-optimized tablet apps, and tablet app downloads from the Apple App Store dwarf those from Google Play," Canalys said. "But Android is expected to continue to close the ecosystem lead iOS has in tablets and increase share in coming quarters. Developers can and will quickly switch their priorities as different opportunities evolve and improve."
Once the iPad mini does not have a plethora of apps on its side, Android tablets could easily take over and push Apple out of the market that they originally made popular.
The Dangers of Being Old
Outside of having a hard time in the sub-9-inch tablet market, Apple also has age to blame for its decrease in iPad sales.
"Apple's decline in shipments and share has been partly attributed to its aging portfolio," Canalys said.
Despite rumors surrounding an iPad refresh, current Android tablets have been able to replicate many of the features that make the iPad great as well as provide superior specs.
Even when the iPad line receives a new device, Canalys analyst James Wang said he does not expect it to receive the same level of attention as previous iPads,
"When Apple does decide to refresh its iPad," Wang said, "it will not experience the buzz of previous launches."

Earning reports do not bear this out! Apple's sales continue to increase where as other tablets have stayed pretty even. How is that? Also, 2nd quarter sales are generally a little flat for Apple as many new products are announced during WWDC in June with product shipments announced for the fall. So, who wouldn't wait? In the world of OS fragmentation (Android) I will wait for the iPad mini retina this fall. Thank you!
