Acer Liquid S2 Shoots Slow-Motion Video
Acer Liquid S2 Shoots Slow-Motion Video

This device is speced to the nines. It runs a recent version of Android. It has a very fast Qualcomm processor in it and the camera takes 4K video by default. What may be more interesting is if you go into the options and set it properly, you can do slow motion in 1080p, said Avi Greengart, principal analyst at Current Analysis.

Computer maker Acer is rolling out several mobile devices at IFA 2013 this week. The Liquid S2 smartphone is already generating a media buzz.

In addition to the new smartphone with 4K recording, Acer will take the lid off a 10.1-inch Iconia A3 Android-based tablet, the new Liquid S2 smartphone and the refreshed Ezel-hinged Aspire R7 notebook with new touch apps and the new Acer Active Pen for more precise touch control.

But, again, some industry watchers expect the Liquid S2 to steal the show. Acer is billing the Liquid S2 as an "ultra-multimedia" smartphone -- and its first with 4K Ultra HD recording capability. A European launch is being anticipated. It's not clear if or when the device will show up in the United States.

Competing With Cameras

Built with a six-inch full HD screen with IPS technology, 4G LTE and the new Wi-Fi 802.11 ac standard, the Liquid S2 comes equipped with dual speakers powered by Dolby Digital Plus. The phone sports a red metal receiver mesh and metallic ring that highlights the 4 LED ring flash for low light and macro image capturing.

The new device also features Gorilla Glass 3.0, which is highly resistant to damage. Meanwhile, a Zero Air Gap Display removes the air between the touch panel and LCD module. That sets the stage for better tactile sense and reduced reflection boosting readability even in sunlight.

The Liquid S2 comes loaded with several camera enhancements including BSI Sensors and LED Ring Flash for sharper pictures, even in low light environments; "Favorite" Mode that lets users create up to five profiles with customized effects, flash, capture modes and scenes; and Exposure Control with one finger focus and exposure adjustment for clear and bright shots.

Slow-Mo Video

We caught up with Avi Greengart, principal analyst at Current Analysis, to get his thoughts on the Liquid S2. He told us the device is yet another entrant into the popular phablet category.

"This device is speced to the nines. It runs a recent version of Android," said Greengart. "It has a very fast Qualcomm processor in it and the camera takes 4K video by default, which is kind of interesting since very few people have a 4K display to view the video on. But Acer could consider itself future-proof. What may be more interesting is if you go into the options and set it properly, you can do slow motion in 1080p."

Rounding out the new product line up, the Iconia A3 tablet is powered with a quad-core 1.2GHz cortex A7 processor and promises 11 hours of smooth HD video playback and better mobile gaming.

Running on Windows 8.1, the refreshed Aspire R7-572 is equipped with an Acer Active Pen and features a set of Acer Touch Tools apps. The Acer Active Pen uses electromagnetic induction technology and responds to different degrees of pressure sensitivity like an actual pen. The Acer Active Pen can be used with gesture controls at the same time, so customers can, for example, resize a picture with a pinching gesture and adjust fine details with the pen.
