Lenovo is out with a new business-targeted ThinkPad tablet. The 10-inch ThinkPad 10 runs both Windows 8.1 and 8.1 Pro, features an Atom quad-core processor, and can be converted into what is essentially a laptop.

The tablet, announced at Lenovo's Accelerate 2014 Partner Forum in Orlando, features protective Gorilla glass on the HD display, and can be used in either tablet, stand, laptop or desktop modes. By docking into the optional ThinkPad Tablet Dock or a USB 3.0 docking station, the tablet can become a full computer, with external screen, mouse, and Bluetooth wireless or wired keyboard.

Luis Hernandez, vice president and general manager for ThinkPad, said in a statement that the 10 tablet "marries business optimized features with a unique multi-mode design to offer an exceptional computing experience that allows users to work, play and create in virtually any environment."

List Price of $599

The model also comes with a digitizer pen, 2 gigabytes of memory expandable to four gigabytes, as long as 10 hours of battery life, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and can handle as much as 128 gigabytes of storage. Lenovo also pointed out the IT-friendly capabilities of VPN access control, application deployment management, and the ability to prevent the installation of blacklisted apps. Other options that might interest businesses include sealed-battery warranties, accidental-damage protection and laser etching/tagging.

Laura DiDio, an analyst with industry research firm Information Technology Intelligence Consulting, told us that businesses may find appealing the memory size, battery life, light weight of 1.3 pounds, Atom quad-core and availability of either 8.1 or 8.1 Pro.

Additionally, she noted, the list price of $599 "is right around the cost of a desktop," and, after discounts, she said the tablet could sell for less than $400. An Ultrabook keyboard for the 10 is available for $129.

Along with the ThinkPad 10, Lenovo also announced an entry-level workstation model called the ThinkStation P300. The company touted its easy-carrying ability, and a Flex module that allows users to add components as needed. The Flex module can support an ultra-slim optical drive, 29-in-1 media card reader, IEEE 1394 Firewire, and eSATA.

'New Level of Customization'

Victor Rios, vice president and general manager of the Workstation unit at Lenovo, told news media that the P300 "features the processing power, graphics capabilities and ISV certifications" needed to run advanced, specialized applications, in addition to "a new level of customization."

The P300, which is available in tower and small form factor models, features an Intel Xeon E3-1200v3 processor and Intel HD P4600 Graphics. The model is targeted at professionals in such industries as oil and gas, media and entertainment, engineering, architecture, finance, medical and science.

The 10 tablet will go on sale in June at Lenovo's site and some retail outlets. The P300, which starts at $729, will also be available in June, through Lenovo business partners as well as at Lenovo's site.
