New ThinkPad Ultrabooks Have Much-Improved Specs

Analyst Charles King said the new Lenovo Ultrabook Thinkpad models were "more than a refresh" because of their thinness, lightness, all-day battery life and new processors. Lenovo, King said, is "showing that it's been listening" to its buyers. The new models will be available at the end of next month, at $899 for the T440, $1,099 for the X240, and $1,149 for the T440s.

In time for the fall season, Lenovo is out with new Ultrabooks for its ThinkPad portfolio. The models feature the new Intel Haswell processors and are thinner and lighter than previous incarnations. At the same time, the company is also unveiling a new, eye-catching panoramic display.

The new models -- the T440s, T440 and X240 -- offer form factors that are 20 percent thinner and trackpads that are up to 45 percent larger.

The redesigned trackpads provide enhanced click capability for supporting gestures in Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system. The laptops also offer what the company said was all-day battery life that uses Lenovo's Power Bridge technology and, thanks to an internal battery, users can "hot swap" a unit's external battery without powering down the machine.

'17 Hours of Battery Life'

Dilip Bhatia, vice president of Marketing in the Think Business Group, said in a statement that the company's ambition to "always build a better laptop has resulted in thinner, lighter and longer lasting ThinkPad laptops with a simpler and cleaner design, and up to an incredible 17 hours of battery life." He said the new lineup resets "the standard for business-class Ultrabooks."

The new models accommodate up to 1 terabyte of storage, and offer sensors to monitor the unit. A G-sensor detects physical shocks, thermal sensors detect heat, and voltage sensors are designed to protect key components from being overloaded. There are also new docking solutions, including a smaller and thinner Basic Dock, a Pro Dock and Ultra Dock.

The T440s offers a touch-enabled 14-inch high-definition screen and can handle up to an Intel Core i7 processor. The T440, which can take up to a Core i5, has an HD+ 14-inch screen with touch-ability as an option. The X240, supporting up to a Core i7, comes with a touch-optional 12.5 inch HD display. It is designed for what Lenovo calls "extreme mobility," weighing under 3 pounds and being only 0.8 inches thin.

Charles King, an analyst with industry research firm Pund-IT, said the new Lenovo models are only "one of the several vendor stories we'll be seeing that relate to the new Intel chips."

'More than a Refresh'

King told us the new models were "more than a refresh" because of their thinness, lightness, all-day battery life and new processors. Lenovo, King said, is "showing that it's been listening" to its buyers.

A new ThinkVision monitor offers Lenovo's first panoramic display, with a 21:9 aspect ratio, a 2560x1080 resolution, and a 29-inch LED backlit panel offering one-third more viewing area than a traditional 16:9 screen. As if that weren't enough, the LT2934z unit also provides a full HD webcam, a dual-array microphone, picture-in-picture capability and audio speakers.

The new models will be available at the end of next month, at $899 for the T440, $1,099 for the X240, and $1,149 for the T440s. The ThinkVision also becomes available in October, starting at $799.
