Selecting a large-screen HDTV is no easy task today. As many as seven competing screen technologies are out there vying for your cash, and they all vary in viewing quality and features.

Plasma screens have proven to be, arguably, the most popular consumer choice. A new model from Philips, the 50PF9631D/37, features the very latest technology and, with a 50-inch (diagonal) screen, is sure to make a big impression in any home-theater environment.

Look and Feel

The screen is impressive, made even more enjoyable because you can see clear images from just about any location in the room, thanks to a 160-degree viewing angle. It's a good thing, because a TV this large commands focus.

The TV and its matching pedestal measure 52.3 x 38.3 x 4.5 inches and weigh 125.2 pounds.

Features

Unlike other HDTVs, plasma models don't project light onto the screen but instead produce light at the screen itself. This results in a consistent light distribution from edge to edge.

The widescreen display reproduces images in 16:9 aspect ratio. The TV has six widescreen modes, including auto format and superzoom.

Three innovations combine to create the stunningly bright display. Pixel Plus+ 3HD technology enhances pixel creation to eliminate jagged lines. Two-channel Ambilight circuitry continuously analyzes and optimizes picture settings according to lighting conditions and creates a glow on the wall around the TV for enhanced viewing pleasure. Digital circuitry controls dynamic contrast and color enhancement.

A USB port allows quick connection of a digital camera or camcorder. An Ethernet port makes it easy to connect a PC for the ultimate high-resolution screen experience.

Inputs include three S-video connectors (one side, two rear), two component video inputs on the rear, two composite video (one side, one rear), one PC/RGB on the rear, and two HDMI connectors on the rear for uncompressed all-digital audio/video links. Three audio connectors (one side, two rear) and one RF connector (rear) are included.

Performance

While plasma screens traditionally have been plagued by image burn-in, this newest generation of plasmas has mostly solved that problem.

Another trouble spot with plasma screens has been their inability to present sharp black tones when mixed with other colors in the picture. We did not see any evidence of this problem while viewing the Philips.

We were very pleased with the overall display quality from the 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution. Plasma is known for high-contrast images with stunning color reproduction, and this model keeps that reputation intact.

Audio from this Philips model was very solid. Two built-in 12-watt speakers have digital signal processing, dynamic bass enhancement, and the virtual Dolby Digital sound system Relevant Products/Services. An Auto Volume Leveler and graphic equalizer contribute to a very pleasing audio experience.

The Verdict

The slim design and high-quality display of Philips 50PF9631D/37 HDTV will make for a beautiful picture in your living room.
