Ahead of the IFA consumer electronics show kicking off September 5th in Berlin, Samsung has announced the coming release of its new Galaxy Note 4 smartphone. It also unveiled the new Galaxy Note Edge, which features a screen whose display extends onto a curved edge.
Revealed on Wednesday during Samsung’s Unpacked event in Berlin, the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge will deliver a “new level of Note culture” to users, Samsung president D.J. Lee told the audience. Because of their large screen sizes, both devices are being described as “phablets.”
The Galaxy Note 4 will be available in October, while the Galaxy Note Edge is due for release “later this year.” Samsung did not provide exact dates or pricing information for either device. Announcing, “The next big thing is coming soon,” the company’s U.S. Web site invites visitors to sign up for updates for both devices ahead of their release dates.
‘Emulates Writing on Paper’
The Galaxy Note 4 features a 5.7-inch, quad-HD screen with a resolution of 2560x1440. It comes with a new S Pen stylus that Samsung said will provide users with “a more natural brush effect that perfectly emulates writing on paper with a fountain or calligraphy pen.”
According to Ines van Gennip, director for the IT and division of Samsung U.K. and Ireland, the Galaxy Note 4's combination of a large screen and stylus brings the “age-old tradition of a notepad and pen into the digital world.”
Featuring a 2.7-GHz quad-core processor and a 32-gigabyte internal memory, the Galaxy Note 4 measures 153.5 x 78.6 x 8.5 mm. It is also equipped with an enhanced fingerprint scanner, a UV sensor -- Samsung said it is a first for a mobile device -- and other sensors, including gesture, barometer and heart rate.
Set for global release, the Galaxy Note 4 will be available in four colors: charcoal black, frost white, bronze gold and blossom pink.
Edge Offers ‘Quick Access’ to Apps
With a 5.6-inch screen that’s slightly smaller than the screen of the Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy Note Edge comes with the same processor, internal memory and other features. Samsung said the resolution of the device is “2560 x 1440 + 160.”
According to Samsung, the device’s curved-edge display “provides quick access to frequently used apps, alerts and device functionality -- even when the cover is closed -- all with the swipe of a thumb.” Users can also receive notifications directly on the Edge Screen while watching videos without interrupting their viewing experiences.
The Galaxy Note Edge will be available in “select markets” and will come in two colors: charcoal black and frost white.
In other Samsung news, the company also unveiled its new Gear VR wearable technology. Developed in partnership with the Facebook-owned virtual reality company Oculus, the Samsung Gear VR will deliver an "immersive mobile content experience to our customers," van Gennip said.

This phone has a cool design, but the thing is, the price is a little bit higher than we expect.
