"Samsung is responding to Motorola's new 'thin' trend with a few different products," said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Gartner. These new phones, she said, might eventually mean that people will be able to ditch their MP3 players.

On Monday, Samsung took the wraps off what it is calling the slimmest mobile phone ever made. Turned sideways, the new phone, dubbed the SGH-X820, is just 6.9 mm (.27 inches) thick.

The new phone, which is so thin it could probably double as a bookmark, is scheduled to be released on Wednesday at Sviaz ExpoComm 2006, a communication technologies trade show held in Moscow each year.

Being thin does not mean the phone lacks features. The new SGH-X820 also serves as an MP3 player with a full 80 MB of onboard storage Relevant Products/Services for tunes.

Moreover, it has Bluetooth capabilities for connecting wirelessly to other devices and a 2 megapixel camera for taking pictures while out and about.

In addition to these features, the phone has a video-out port that can be used to show pictures on TV sets or computer monitors.

"Samsung is responding to Motorola's new 'thin' trend with a few different products," said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Gartner. These new phones, she said, might eventually mean that people will be able to ditch their MP3 players.

The SGH-X820 is scheduled to be released this month in Europe and Russia and next month in China. There is no word yet on a U.S. release date or what the pricing for the device will be once it arrives here.
