Amid a slew of announcements on Thursday, Oracle introduced support for Android with its latest virtual desktop client. Oracle Virtual Desktop Client 1.2 for tablets adds to the company's mobile Relevant Products/Services capabilities.

Oracle already offers virtual desktop client software Relevant Products/Services for iPad, Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. The software makes it possible to deploy Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and Sun Ray Software on mobile devices -- and helps IT deliver on corporate "bring your own device Relevant Products/Services" initiatives.

"Enterprise adoption of mobile devices is expanding rapidly and users want access to their desktop applications from anywhere," said Wim Coekaerts, senior vice president for Linux and Virtualization Engineering at Oracle. "The new Oracle Virtual Desktop Client for Android and enhancements for iPad and other platforms help organizations provide mobile workers with secure Relevant Products/Services access to their applications and data Relevant Products/Services."

Android Gets iOS Parity

Oracle said Virtual Desktop Client 1.2 for tablets provides both new and enhanced touchscreen Relevant Products/Services gestures and support for Retina displays on newer iPads.

Oracle Virtual Desktop Client 1.2 for tablets supports the latest Android 4.x tablets. That, Oracle said, provides Android users the same access to Oracle desktop virtualization Relevant Products/Services deployments as iOS users. Also, on-screen keyboard enhancements offer access to extended keys and maximize the screen viewing area.

Oracle said new gestures provide faster access to frequently used client functions. And one-click shortcuts to previously connected desktops makes it easier to switch from one virtual desktop to another. Enhanced user productivity offers administrator-managed copy-and-paste features between the local tablet and remote Relevant Products/Services desktop.

Breaking Records, Winning Kudos

In other Oracle news Thursday, the company announced first Oracle Accelerate solutions for Oracle Fusion Human Capital Management (HCM). The solution promises to help mid-size organizations adopt modern solutions for growing and managing their business.

Oracle also revealed it had shipped more than 3 exabytes of media for its StorageTek T10000C Tape Drives. That's triple the capacity shipped last year. At the same time, Oracle reports that Oracle Commerce adoption increased internationally and across numerous industries. Oracle Commerce combines Oracle's ATG Web Commerce and Oracle Endeca Commerce into an end-to-end commerce solution.

On the accolades front, Gartner just named Oracle a Leader in its latest "Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management." This was the third 2012 Magic Quadrant in which Oracle WebCenter was named a Leader. Gartner's Magic Quadrant reports position vendors within a particular quadrant based on their completeness of vision and ability to execute.

Oracle's PeopleSoft also won kudos. For the second year in a row, KLAS has named Oracle's PeopleSoft Financials best Financials/ERP software in its "2012 Best in KLAS Awards: Software & Services" report. Oracle's PeopleSoft 9.1 is an ERP suite that helps companies operate more efficiently, saving time and money.
