HP Updates ConvergedSystems for Data Centers

The enhanced ConvergedSystem and Converged Storage product groups from HP create an agile pool of resources that can deploy quickly, accelerate results and transform a company’s data into actionable competitive insight. HP's new ConvergedSystem and Converged Storage offerings are a "we’re in this, too" announcement.

Updated versions of HP's ConvergedSystem and Converged Storage offerings for virtualization, cloud and big data, provide faster implementation and lower costs that businesses need for the next generation of data centers, according to the company. The announcement comes on the eve of the company’s Discover conference for partners and users in Barcelona, Spain.

Citing a Gartner study that predicted data capacities for enterprises will grow over 800 percent in the next five years, HP said that companies need to streamline their deployments for virtualization and the cloud. This new style of IT, the company said, can eliminate IT complexity through such choices as adoption of the ConvergedSystem portfolio, which is designed specifically for virtualization, big data and hosted desktops.

HP said that these purpose-built packages can be up and running in as little as 20 days, from order to operations, and IT departments have to spend less time on systems design and integration. The company cited a projection by industry research firm IDC that indicated the spending on such optimized, pre-packaged converged systems will grow three times faster than the spending on traditional hardware and software for infrastructure.

‘Agile Pool of Resources’

The ConvergedSystem for Virtualization offers modules with 50 to 1000 virtual machines at what HP said was twice the performance, with an entry price 25 percent lower than competitive solutions. The ConvergedSystem 300 for Vertica, the analytics software HP bought in 2011, is said to provide 50 to 1000 times the performance of comparable traditional data warehouses, at a cost that is 70 percent lower per terabyte, and it can be used with either the Microsoft or the VMware hypervisor.

HP said that the PC-on-a-chip ConvergedSystem 100 for Hosted Desktops has graphics performance that is six times faster and 44 percent lower than the competition in total cost of ownership. The StoreOnce Backup, StoreAll Archive and 3PAR StoreServ Storage similarly offer what the company said was greater backup performance at lower costs. There is also a unified support in the form of HP Proactive Care for ConvergedSystem products, which services third-party partner software as well as HP’s products.

Bill Veghte, executive vice president and general manager of HP’s Enterprise Group, said in a statement that the ConvergedSystem and Converged Storage product groups create “an agile pool of resources that can deploy quickly, accelerate results and transform an organization’s most valuable asset -- its data -- into actionable competitive insight.”

‘Same General Direction’

Charles King, an analyst with Pund-IT, said that HP’s converged systems head “in the same general direction as its competitors IBM, Dell and Oracle” in providing pre-packaged, highly integrated, more powerful but cost-efficient systems that are optimized for specific purposes or applications. As examples, he pointed to IBM’s Flex System virtualization package or its application-specific PureSystems. The Vertica package, he said, could be compared to similar offerings by Oracle for Exadata.

He added that this is a “kind of ‘we’re in this, too’ announcement for HP,” and builds on the fact that the company’s enterprise division shows its “most positive revenues.”
