Call it a first. Audi of America and AT&T just announced pricing for in-vehicle 4G LTE connectivity: $99 for a 5 GB, six-month plan and $499 for a 30 GB, 30-month plan, or a little less than $17 a month for either plan.
The new plans are for the 2014 A3 sedan, which rolls out to car dealerships this month as the first in the market to offer 4G LTE data connection capabilities in North America.
"Having the choice of two data plans gives the consumer the opportunity to choose a contract that works best for their lifestyle and allows them to maintain connectivity in the vehicle for an extended period of time," said Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America. "The new AT&T data plans with 4G LTE connectivity will allow Audi drivers to enjoy seamless navigation, streaming and high-speed access to the Internet."
Six Months Free
It's a good spiel for the luxury car consumer. To whet your data appetite, the companies are offering free six-month trial period, sort of like Siri does on the Internet radio front.
According to the automaker, previous experience with its 3G+ Audi connect owners reveals they prefer either a six-month or a 30-month term because it fits in with their typical usage in-vehicle. If you start to reach your data plan limit, you'll get an e-mail alert to warn you.
A Wireless Companion
Audi is also letting AT&T consumers leverage their Mobile Share data plan option. AT&T debuted its Mobile Share Value Plans in December. AT&T's smartphone customers can save $15 a month on Mobile Share Value plans. Customers can receive these monthly savings under four circumstances: (1) when they get new smartphones with no down payments with AT&T Next; (2) when they bring their own smartphones; (3) when they purchase smartphones at full retail price; or (4) when their smartphones are no longer under contract and they switch to the new plans.
For Audi's part, the automaker plans to roll out 4G LTE capabilities across its new and refreshed models that come to market. For now, the new A3 family sports the most-advanced-yet version of Audi connect. The system reads news headlines out loud, offers picture navigation, tells you what's going on in your Facebook and Twitter networks, connects you with more than 7,000 Web radio stations, hooks you up with personalized news feeds and more.
The AT&T 4G LTE option is available in select markets at kickoff.
