Even as tech industry analysts continue their discussion of VMware's $1.2 billion Nicira buy, the
company is out spending more cash on tools to expand its Big Data portfolio.
VMware hasn't made any official announcement, but Pattern Insight on Tuesday issued a statement indicating it has agreed to sell its Log Insight product, along with its team and technology, to the company. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Pattern Insight describes Log Insight as an analytics and log management platform that has the ability to analyze large amounts of machine-generated in real time. It is used for operational analytics in traditional data center and environments. The company said the tool has the ability to discover emerging patterns and guide administrators to the root cause of problems.
"Ever since we started Pattern Insight, our vision has been to change how people search, mine and analyze their vast amounts of IT and Engineering data," said Spiros Xanthos, CEO and co-founder of Pattern Insight. "Log Insight, a log analytics product, is the culmination of our efforts aiming at management and real-time operational analytics for IT data regardless of scale."
Cloud computing and virtualization make IT environments more efficient, he said, but infrastructure and grow larger and more complex at the same time. That, he said, drives the need to rely on data to manage them, and making better decisions becomes even more pressing.
"Log Insight combines analytics and log management technology and has the ability to analyze vast amounts of machine-generated data in real time and lead administrators to the root cause of problems very quickly," Xanthos said. "Furthermore, it can provide insights on emerging trends and hidden patterns, revealing issues before they even manifest."
Xanthos sees VMware as ideally positioned in the middle of the two most important IT shifts in recent years: virtualization and cloud computing. He said he believed VMware would maximize Log Insight technology.
"My guess is that VMware will use this tool as a way to get insight into how services are performing and almost create some benchmarks against it," said Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research, "so that as more of their customers get into Big Data they can offer some best practices around analytics to help them make the service hum along."
The buy could be somewhat of a protective measure for VMware, Kerravala told us. VMware doesn't want to see its customers have a bad experience with their cloud service and tie that back to VMware. Log Insight, he said, could give VMware a looking glass into the cloud service to gain understanding of what went wrong if problems occur.
"You are going to see a fair amount of industry focus on trying to provide visibility into cloud services," Kerravala said. "When you look at the majority of network management tools and performance management tools are largely focused on the physical world. More and more services are going virtual and they have to be able to span both worlds. It seems to me that's what VMware is doing."
