It's not a device that lets you quickly look things up on Wikipedia. Rather, the Wikipad is a 7-inch Android-powered tablet made for gamers, with a 12-core Nvidia GPU and Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor. And it will be available for $249 in the U.S. beginning June 11, the company announced Tuesday.

Wikipad hopes to "redefine" mobile gaming with a product that melds the feel of a console with the portability of a tablet. It comes with a detachable, dual-analog controller, 16 GB of internal memory, a microSD slot to accommodate another 32 GB, GPS, three-axis accelerometer, e-compass, gyroscope, 2-megapixel front-facing camera and support for micro-HDMI. It runs on Android 4.1, or "Jelly Bean."

"The launch of the Wikipad 7 tablet signals a transformative turning point in the direction of the mobile gaming industry. Wikipad's tablet combines the latest range of features found in a premium Android tablet together with the unrivaled console video game experience only available with a gamepad," said Matthew Joynes, chairman of Wikipad Inc., in a statement.

Higher Performance than iPad

The Wikipad, which accesses content from PlayStation Mobile, Big Fish Games, Nvidia's TegraZone app, Google Play for Android, the OnLive cloud platform and others, seems a natural step for those seeking to graduate from handheld gaming devices like Nintendo's DSi and Sony's PlayStation Portable to a dedicated gaming device not locked to a particular platform.

"The opportunity for gaming-optimized tablets comes from consumers that have invested in handset games and are now looking for a more immersive experience -- a larger screen coupled with higher performance," mobile devices expert Jeff Orr of ABI Research told us.

"With continued innovation in processor performance, graphics performance, and battery optimization, tablets can deliver a console-like experience without the constraints of location."

Orr added that the Wikipad is more appealing to gamers than Apple's iPad or Samsung's Galaxy Tab or Galaxy Note because it is optimized for better graphic and video performance.

"The leading tablets today certainly offer a good gaming experience, though they are optimized for a broader range of applications," he said.

Work Uses, Too

But just as all work and no play is seen as a disadvantage, the Wikipad isn't exactly all play. It can also access business apps and use corporate e-mail, and uses Google's Chrome browser for search and Microsoft's Skype for video conferencing, for when it's time to answer the actual call of duty.

The Wikipad is 11.26 inches wide, 5.71 inches high and weighs just 1.23 pounds (including the controller.)

The size is smaller than the standard iPad but about the same as an iPad mini or Samsung's 7-inch Galaxy Tab.

"We wanted to get Wikipad into our community's hands and what we found was that the smaller 7" form factor just seemed right,'" said Fraser Townley, Wikipad's president of Sales, in announcing the tablet last February. "The smaller frame delivers an aggressive price while keeping the same amazing specs."
