Blue Coat Systems is expanding into the Big Data security, intelligence and analytics for advanced threat protection space. The company has snapped up Intel-backed Solera Networks. Financial terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Specifically, Blue Coat is betting that the Solera DeepSee platform will add strategic capabilities to its product portfolio, paving the way to deliver an end-to-end security solution that spans protection, remediation and governance. The deal is also expected to help Blue Coat give enterprise customers visibility into the content and context of advanced targeted attacks.

"Today's approach to securing the enterprise is missing an essential element -- the ability to defend, react and resolve security issues by efficiently mining a very large dataset of network history to gain previously unavailable insights," said Greg Clark, CEO at Blue Coat Systems. "The future of the industry is moving beyond just blocking malware and stopping targeted attacks to also identifying and resolving the full scope of the attacks in real time."

Leveraging Big Data

Clark went on to say that retrospective capture and analytics are now an essential component of modern security architecture. Charles Kolodgy, research vice president of security at IDC agrees. He said traditional security solutions are becoming obsolete against today's advanced threats, as evidenced by constant stories announcing data breaches.

"Discovery and prevention of emerging threats has become one of the most critical priorities for C-level executives," said Kolodgy. "Bringing together Solera's innovative security analytics capabilities with Blue Coat's comprehensive Web intelligence should allow customers to fully monitor and enforce countermeasures on networks constantly under attack."

Blue Coat currently rates more than 1 billion Web requests per day. When the acquisition closes in about 30 days, the companies plan to work together to leverage the network effect of 75 million users from more than 15,000 customers worldwide, including 86 percent of the Fortune Global 500. The companies expect the merged solution to help enterprises identify and resolve the full scope of advanced threats.

Inspecting Deep Packets

We caught up with Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT, to get his take on the deal. He told us Solera's solution can help beef up Blue Coat's technology.

"Solera's DeepSee platform leverages real-time inspection of deep packets, meaning that it's able to take a very deep look into very large files and then use real-time analytics to detect malicious code or possible security issues that would cause a security concern for businesses," King said. "The deal in essence is designed to allow Blue Coat to extend services to its customers to look at ever-larger files and ever-larger volumes of data."

Solera's customers include organizations around the world in many market segments, including the Departments of Energy, Homeland Security and Defense, Hitachi, Qualcomm, Overstock.com, Parsons Corporation and Zions Bank. Solera's DeepSee platform helps them defend against advanced persistent threats and targeted malware attacks.
