Egnyte Partners with Synology To Offer Hybrid Storage
Egnyte Partners with Synology To Offer Hybrid Storage

Synology America's product marketing manager Jason Bonoan said the partnership with Egnyte combines "an enterprise-grade file-sharing application" with his company's storage solutions, providing better network bandwidth and better options for customers to easily and securely share their business files, both inside and outside the office.

File-sharing provider Egnyte and network attached storage vendor Synology are now working together to provide a suite of file-sharing and storage offerings for mid-sized businesses. The companies are demonstrating their new technology integration at the Consumer Electronics Show, which opened Tuesday in Las Vegas.

The partnership is intended to provide a single solution for anywhere, any-device access to secure local, off-line and cloud file access. File collaboration and syncing can occur using Egnyte's solution, through Synology DiskStation network attached storage. Egnyte, which is designed to offer secure file sharing outside of a firewall without new infrastructure, can be deployed on multiple DiskStations across a variety of locations, but operated as if in one location.

Jason Bonoan, Synology America's product marketing manager, said in a statement that the partnership combines "an enterprise-grade file-sharing application" with his company's storage solutions, providing "better network bandwidth" and enabling "options for our customers to easily and securely share their business files both inside and outside of the office."

Combo Solution

For Egnyte, senior director of business development Bart Giordano told news media that "the cloud is not enough when it comes to sharing and storing business files," and added that the partnership offers "the best combination of on-premise and cloud-sharing capabilities." The combined solution includes an Egnyte application on a Synology NAS drive to run the solution.

Businesses and consumers have a variety of cloud-based file-sharing options these days, with several, including the Mountain View, Calif.-based Egnyte, being focused on the enterprise. Egnyte's platform is designed to satisfy IT's need for security, in part by storing highly sensitive locally on-premises and low-sensitivity documents in the cloud, plus several varieties of hybrid storage in-between.

NAS solutions, such as offered by Synology, are popular among SMBs because of their speed, low cost and control over their data, but the drawbacks -- including physical vulnerability and the need to buy more drives to increase storage -- have given impetus to the kinds of hybrid solutions that Egnyte offers. In this context, the new partnership can be seen as providing a range of hybrid solutions, including connecting various NAS devices across locations.

$30 Million

Amidst all the talk of cloud-based storage, there is a growing sense among many types of businesses that hybrid is the way to go. Cloud-based solutions raise security, privacy and compliance issues, not to mention access to critical data when connectivity drops out. On-premise solutions counter many of those issues, but cannot match the cost, scalability and anywhere-access of cloud storage.

By straddling these back-and-forths, Egnyte and others are hoping to make hybrid seem like a more flexible and secure solution for the conflicting needs. The company has been gaining steam in recent months, such as scoring nearly $30 million in investment funding in December to fuel its expansion plans, which include a greater global presence and strategic investments in product development, sales and marketing.
