Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) plans to tap into Micron's 25-nanometer NAND flash memory for its new hybrid optical disk drive. The HLDS Hybrid Drive offers a mass-storage and removable-media solution that works with PCs, DVD players, and Blu-ray products.
Though only 25 nanometers, Micron's NAND process technology offers 8GB of storage. That technology makes way for new applications that demand high-capacity storage in space-constrained designs. The HLDS drives will be available at capacities ranging from 16GB to 64GB, with even greater capacities promised in future versions of the embedded flash-memory product.
Kevin Kilbuck, director of marketing for Micron's NAND solutions group, said Hitachi has found another "innovative application" for its product. Indeed, Micron's NAND embedded flash memory has already found its way onto everything from digital cameras and MP3 players to smartphones and tablet PCs.
Targeting Light Notebooks
The HLDS Hybrid Drive may be a good fit for thin and light notebooks that traditionally had space for one drive. Micron said the optical disk drive is also suitable for client applications, where a hard drive or solid-state drive would be used for long-term storage. In these applications, the Hybrid Drive would be used for caching and launching applications, providing an improvement in system performance, including faster boot times, Micron explained.
"The second-generation Hybrid Drive, embedded with Micron's industry-leading 25nm NAND, is designed to fit in the conventional ODD form factor, allowing easy replacement of a conventional ODD and providing the added benefit of onboard storage," said YK Park, chief marketing officer for HLDS.
By creating a truly hybrid storage and optical drive solution, Park said, the Hybrid Drive also provides approximately a 50 to 70 percent performance improvement when compared to a stand-alone hard drive.
