Looking for new ways to save time and work smarter? The good news is that the list of productivity apps for iOS and Android mobile devices keeps growing, with plenty of choices to ease your day. Work-support apps range from ambient noise boosts to business card readers to managing time and keeping better records.
Getting lots of favorable and easy-on-the-ears buzz is iOS app, Coffitivity. This app has come to the rescue of both types of humans, those who freeze up on the keyboard if the room is stone silent and those who freeze up on the keyboard when two coworkers start talking about artisan bread.
For $1.99 you instead get ambient noise, as a productivity boost. You can work against coffee-shop types of sounds, vibrant enough to cut the silence but easy enough to blot out a chatty workspace. Options run from gentle morning murmur to lunchtime hum.
Business Card Reader Pro for the iPhone assists smartphone users who are always groping through piles of business cards. This app would be useful for workers who frequent trade shows, as well as sales and marketing staff.
The card reader app takes a picture of the card, reads it, and automatically fills in details in contact information fields for an iOS address book, storing phone contacts. The app recognizes business cards in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Danish, Dutch, Greek, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Another business card pileup solution is CamCard. With this app, all you have to do is take a photo of a business card, and the information is imported into your phone contact list and your CamCard account. You can sort, manage and group cards. The app is available for most iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, Windows 8 or Android devices.
Data Doldrums Rescue
For iPad-using marketers who cope with disparate analytics flying at them from websites and social networks, there is always the free visualization app, Captain Dash. This app consolidates all that data so you can view it in one place.
If you believe that data visualization is the most efficient way to understand information hidden behind volumes of data, then Captain Dash behaves as a dashboard for analytics. You can aggregate data from Google Analytics, Twitter and Facebook, Foursquare and Microsoft Atlas accounts for an attractive view of graphical breakdowns.
SwiftKey ($1.99) has become a hit with Android users who do a lot of typing on mobile devices, The app, which promotes itself as a keyboard that understands you, provides accurate autocorrect and next-word prediction in 60 languages.
FastCustomer relieves the nightmare of listening to headache-inducing, on-hold music, especially when you need to continue working while waiting for live customer service representatives on the phone. As an alternative to the bad music, you continue what you are doing and FastCustomer does the waiting for you.
The app provides a long list of companies you may wish to contact. Tap the screen and FastCustomer will ring your phone once for you when the customer rep finally gets on the line. The app works for Android devices, Kindle Fire and Chrome.
Just Get It Done
The majority of today's workers rely on their mobile devices and apps to stay connected no matter where they are. As mobile devices for work continue to gain momentum, professionals will increasingly look to productivity apps that can support the work they do.
A survey from Premiere Global Services Inc. (PGI), a virtual meetings company, found that 42 percent of U.S. employees choose to check in with the office once a day while on vacation, and 40 percent report checking in multiple times a day.
Sean O'Brien, PGi executive vice president, noted a trend where "work" becomes less about the place you go, but more closely aligned with getting the job done.
