Apple Sets Sept. 9 Event: iPhone 6, iWatch on Tap?
Save the date. Apple formally announced its long-anticipated “special event," will take place on September 9. The tech giant is expected to take the wraps off the iPhone 6, and a new wearable device believed to be the iWatch.
The company has remained cryptic about exactly what it will be unveiling. Apple's invite teased followers with only the cryptic phrase “wish we could say more” and the date of the event.
New Sizes, Tougher Screen
Details of the iPhone 6’s new features have been steadily trickling out over the past several months. Several of the apps Apple has released this year have hinted at the expanded capabilities the new iPhone may support, including HealthKit, an app that can measure users' blood pressure, heart rate and other details, and HomeKit, which will allow customers to control appliances in their homes with their phones, including lights, plugs and door locks. Both are being included in the upcoming iOS 8, which is expected to come pre-installed on the new handsets.
Beyond new software, photos purporting to show the new models indicate that the iPhone 6 will come in two new, larger sizes: one with a 4.7-inch screen, and another with a 5.5-inch screen. The new phones are also expected to come with the more durable Sapphire screens, which should make them more scratch-resistant than prior models.
Leaked photos also appear to show a redesigned flash unit using Apple’s True Tone flash technology, and a much thinner body than previous models. Stories in the Chinese press have shown a new, reversible USB cable port. The leaks also show that the power button is moved from the top of the handset to the side.
More Storage, More Pixels, More Battery
Under the hood, the iPhone 6 is rumored to sport both the faster, more efficient, A8 , and a faster LTE Advanced modem, both of which should also help mitigate the notorious battery problems experienced by many Apple products. The battery itself should also represent an upgrade over earlier models, with 15 percent more capacity. Combining a bigger battery with the more efficient A8 chip could help the iPhone 6 last for more than a day.
Reports suggest the company will continue to use a dual core processor running at 2GHz. Although some reports had suggested that both models will be available with 128 GB of storage, that much space will likely only be available on the 5.5-inch model. The 4.7-inch model is expected to top out at 64 GB.
According to some leaked schematics, the handset will contain a space for a near field communication chip that would allow users to pay for purchases using their iPhone as a virtual wallet. Meanwhile, the iPhone’s camera resolution may be in for a major boost, with rumors circulating that it could reach as high as 13 megapixels, thanks to technology provided by Sony.
