Aside from the core components, HP includes an integrated audio card with internal speakers. Additionally, the d220 comes loaded with an integrated Broadcom 10/100 networking card. In terms of basic functionality, the d220 has everything a user needs.

The video card, though not very appealing, is on par with most entry-level business machines. HP offers an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics card. Like most integrated video cards, the Intel Extreme allocates system memory for video functions. Since the video card cannot be upgraded via Hewlett Packard, users are advised to upgrade the system memory to enhance overall PC and video performance.

Unfortunately, the HP d220 standard model features no data Relevant Products/Services-writing capabilities. The only removable storage Relevant Products/Services drive in the entire system is a 48x CD-ROM. Unless a CD-RW is in your sights, HP offers a must-have floppy disk drive for US$19.

The Final Word

The HP Compaq d220 is available direct from Hewlett Packard for a price of $349. Hewlett Packard has done an excellent job at pricing this system. Granted, the machine is extremely limited and features only basic hardware and software components to remain functional. Nevertheless, as an entry-level business machine, the HP d220 is a worthwhile product.

Overall, on a scale from one to five, I rate the HP Compaq d220 a 4.0. The d220 targets a specific market well but does little for anyone else.
