Wii Peaks at 8:00 p.m.
The company said that GamePlay Metrics used the same infrastructure to collect data as its famed TV rating system does, and that the data can be sliced and diced in many dimensions. In one example, which could be confirmed by any parent of a game-playing child, Nielsen found that Wii's usage in April peaked at about 5:00 p.m., while during the Summer it usually hit top at about 8:00 p.m. In addition, Nielsen found, Wii households are top-drawer, as they are more likely than other console households to have a gross income over $100,000.
To create console data for GamePlay Metrics, an audio sample is collected from a Nielsen device and matched with an audio signature library of every game on the six most popular game consoles. The data is collected from more than 12,000 households, which, together, have about 33,000 people.
In addition to gathering the audio-sampling data, Nielsen conducts weekly online surveys, which have been active for more than two years. The surveys track the patterns of 1,200 game players who range from 7 to, yes, 54 years old. Nielsen defines a "player" as someone who lives in a household with a console or PC, plays at least one hour a week, and has bought one or more games in the past half-year.
