Sprint Nextel will release the Palm Pixi for $99 on Nov. 15 with a two-year contract. The Palm Pixi uses Palm's webOS platform and runs multiple applications. The Palm Pixi also combines contacts, calendars and messages. While the Palm Pixi is new, an analyst sees Sprint and Palm as dying companies, especially with Sprint's focus on WiMAX.

On Monday, Sprint Nextel announced the official release date and cost of the Palm Pixi. Palm's latest device will become available exclusively from Sprint on Nov. 15 at a price of $99.99 with a two-year contract.

Running the Palm webOS mobile platform, the Palm Pixi is designed for active mobile users. The smartphone lets users keep multiple activities open and move between them using natural gestures. For example, users can move between messaging and e-mail or searching the Web while also listening to music. And a universal search feature offers results from both the device and the Web.

"Simply put, this phone is fun and easy to use; with its multi-touch screen and full QWERTY keyboard, it's a great device for messaging and social networking Relevant Products/Services at a price everyone can enjoy, and delivers so many of the great features people love about Palm Pre in a fantastic new form factor, making it a huge hit for consumers," said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president of product development at Sprint.

The Power of webOS

The Palm webOS brings together a user's information from the phone, at work, or on the Web into one view. In addition to linking information from Google, Facebook, Microsoft Relevant Products/Services Exchange ActiveSync, and LinkedIn, the Palm Pixi also adds Yahoo integration Relevant Products/Services to Palm Synergy.

Palm Synergy offers features like linked contacts, which offers a single view of contacts from a variety of sources. Another feature, layered calendars, lets users see calendars on their own or layered together in a single view combining work, family, friends, sports teams, or other interests.

Combined messaging lets users see all the conversations with the same person in a chat-style view, including MMS, even if it started in IM and switched to text messaging. The user can even see who's active in a buddy list from contacts or e-mail, and start a new conversation with one touch. On the social-networking front, a new Facebook application will be available with Palm Pixi so users can see and comment on all the latest news from friends and easily update their status.

Palm Pixi comes with a charger, but Palm recently introduced the Touchstone charging dock. Touchstone is an inductive charging solution for phones. It allows Palm Pixi to be set on top of the dock without worrying about connection, orientation or fit. The device remains active while charging, so users can work the touchscreen, watch movies or video, or talk using the speakerphone option. Touchstone is available in Sprint stores for $79.99.
